Background of the Study
Phonological processes are fundamental to the structure of languages, shaping sound patterns and contributing to linguistic identity. Nigerian indigenous languages, notably Yoruba and Hausa, provide a rich comparative framework due to their distinct phonological characteristics. Yoruba is celebrated for its tonal complexity and melodic intonation, while Hausa exhibits unique consonantal clusters and vowel systems that result in diverse phonological phenomena such as assimilation, elision, and vowel harmony (Adebayo, 2023). Comparative analysis of these processes not only reveals the systematic patterns within each language but also offers insights into how historical developments and socio-cultural factors influence phonology. With modernization and increased interlingual contact, both languages are experiencing shifts in their phonological landscapes (Umar, 2024). This study examines and compares these phonological processes to understand their roles in language evolution and cultural preservation. By integrating historical data with contemporary observations, the research aims to contribute to theoretical models of phonological change while highlighting the adaptability and resilience of indigenous languages in Nigeria (Bello, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
While numerous studies have explored individual aspects of phonology in Nigerian languages, a comparative analysis of phonological processes between Yoruba and Hausa remains underdeveloped. The lack of integrative research examining phenomena such as assimilation, elision, and vowel harmony in both languages hinders a comprehensive understanding of how these processes contribute to linguistic identity and evolution (Adebayo, 2023). This gap is particularly significant given the increasing influence of modernization and interlingual contact on indigenous phonological systems. Without systematic comparison, it is challenging to draw generalized conclusions about phonological adaptation and its implications for language preservation (Umar, 2024). This study addresses these concerns by comparing the phonological processes in Yoruba and Hausa, thereby enriching our understanding of Nigerian linguistics (Bello, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To compare the phonological processes in Yoruba and Hausa.
To identify similarities and differences in assimilation, elision, and vowel harmony.
To assess the implications of these processes for language evolution and preservation.
Research Questions
What are the key phonological processes observed in Yoruba and Hausa?
How do these processes differ between the two languages?
What are the implications of these phonological differences for language evolution and cultural identity?
Significance of the Study
This study enhances the understanding of phonological processes in Nigerian indigenous languages by providing a comparative analysis of Yoruba and Hausa. The research contributes to linguistic theory and supports language preservation efforts by highlighting how distinct phonological phenomena evolve under similar sociocultural pressures (Adebayo, 2023; Umar, 2024; Bello, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the comparative analysis of phonological processes in Yoruba and Hausa. It is limited to analyzing specific phenomena such as assimilation, elision, and vowel harmony and does not extend to other linguistic features or additional indigenous languages.
Definitions of Terms
Phonological Processes: Systematic sound changes that occur within a language.
Indigenous Languages: Native languages that have evolved within a particular region.
Assimilation: A phonological process in which a sound becomes similar to an adjacent sound.
